Artist Statement

The artist has woven these 36 individual forms intuitively, meditating on the idea of how air and water can feel and look. Cold air is sharp and water ripples and splashes, making this work appear familiar yet strange simultaneously. This work also references the glass chandelier sculptures of American artist Dale Chihuly and similar to his work this is created through the collision of art and craft. The many and numerous shapes that make up Air & Water are eccentrically organic, a celebration of the wonder of nature.

Fiona Gavino is a nationally recognised fibre artist with Australian, Filipino and Māori heritage.  Fiona has been described as an intercultural artist working the traditional into the contemporary. Basketry is the foundation to her practice, coupled with attentive conceptual ideas and intercultural dialogues. In 2022, she exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe for the third time.
