Aqualand Artist Interview Series

Each artist has a different story. Some live around the corner, others have travelled thousands of miles to exhibit at Bondi. See and hear from the artists in Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi in the Aqualand artist videos.

 

John Petrie (NSW)

Australian artist and Recipient of the Aqualand Sculpture Award John Petrie talks about his sculpture ’23.5º’. When determining how the upper boulder would rest on the lower one, the angle of the Earth’s axis, 23.5º, came to the artists mind. The sculpture is a meditation on this phenomenon and brings together the rugged boulder terrain of The Great Dividing Range and the refined aesthetic he was exposed to when living in Japan. The work is exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2023

Leda Alexopoulou (Greece)

Greek artist Leda Alexopoulou speaks about her sculpture ‘Keep Walking’, a surreal sculpture and an ironic depiction of humankind’s impossible transformation into a hybrid-being in order to survive and adapt in an unfamiliar and hostile environment created by humans, exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2023. Johannes Pannekoek (WA)

Australian artist Johannes Pannekoek talks about his sculpture ‘Lifeblood I’, an exploration of the interconnectedness in nature, drawing inspiration from Earth’s rivers, tributaries, and their ophidian form. The sculpture represents the vital force that flows through all living organisms, inspiring reverence and reflection on our responsibility to protect the lifeblood of our planet’s ecosystems. Emryn Ingram-Shute (NSW)

Australian artist Emryn Ingram-Shute speaks about her sculpture ‘No Colour in War’, the installation seeks to connect with the tragedy of the Ukrainian invasion through the deconstruction of the anti-tank obstacles. The work is exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2023. Video by Gareth Carr.


India Collins (Canada | QLD)

Australian artist India Collins talks about her sculpture ‘Yatra ‘Journey’’ – A tribute to the mysterious and ethereal jellyfish. Evoking notions of departure, eliciting possibilities of alternate existential realities, this work presents a visceral and poetic exposition of our deepest vulnerabilities, exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2023. Anton Forde (NZ)

New Zealand artist Anton Forde speaks about his work ‘Papare / Protection’. The series of carved sculptures are time-travelling sentinels, all seeing, all knowing, individually and collectively they stand as guardians and protectors, exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2023. Australian artist Joel Adler talks about his sculpture “Viewfinder” – essentially a reverse periscope which reflects the crashing waves below, exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2019.


Karin van Der Molen (Netherlands)

Karin van Der Molen, from the Netherlands, talks about her artwork ‘Kintsugi Coral’ exhibited in Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2019, which uses recycled broken crockery to create ‘coral’. Van de Molen is inspired by the Japanese way of repairing broken cups with gold which makes the cups more valuable.
