The School Education Program at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi offers unique out of classroom learning and fun through Artist-led Sculpture Making Workshops and talks with exhibiting artists. Exhibiting artists are accompanied by our experienced team of educators who also deliver interactive exhibition Focus Tours.

Self-Guided Visits

We encourage schools to inform us of their visit. Schools that provide us with details of their visit are invited to collect a free Kids’ Guide and Exhibition Catalogue from the Exhibition Reception Office in Marks Park on their arrival.

Artist-led Sculpture Making Workshops

A unique opportunity for students to meet and work with a professional exhibiting artist and explore materials and processes involved in creating sculpture through activities based on the artist’s practice. Workshops explore concepts such as relationships with the built environment and the natural world through discovery and play-based learning experiences. Students have been introduced to art making techniques using clay, wire, plaster, salvaged and recycled material, paper, and natural materials.

Location: Tamarama
Dates: Weekdays throughout the exhibition (20 Oct – 6 Nov)
Times: 10am -11.30am AND 12.30-2pm (90mins)
Cost:  $460 includes artist fee and a Kids’ Guide Catalogue per student (max 30 students in each group)

Focus Tours

Students will explore and engage with a selection of sculptures guided by a Sculpture by the Sea educator. Participants will develop visual literacy skills, an in-depth understanding of the conceptual framework and the relationship between the artist, artwork and audience in an international context. During a 60min tour with interactive discussion and activities the program will serve to link the artworks to relevant STEM and HSIE subject areas.

Location: Marks Park
Dates: Weekdays throughout the exhibition (20 Oct – 6 Nov)
Times: 9.30am -10.30am AND 11am-12pm AND 12.30pm-1.30pm
Cost:  $200 per group (max 15 students per tour)

Artist Spotlight Talks for Secondary Students

Students meet and view the work of two exhibiting artists. The tours comprise of an introduction to the exhibition followed by an interactive presentation by the artists on site with their work. They discuss issues such as concept and processes, their body of work, materials and techniques, site and context, the role of the artist, audiences, and the art world. Go in depth with our artists in uncovering inspiration and relationship to site, an ideal case study for senior classes.

Dates: Weekdays throughout the exhibition (20 Oct – 6 Nov)
Times: 10.30am -11.30am AND 12pm-1pm (60mins)
Cost: $300 (max 30 students in each group)

English as a Second Language (ESL) Tours

Led by a specialist educator, the tour will introduce the exhibition and present a selection of works with a focus on encouraging students use of language to describe subjective and objective responses to the sculptures and the processes involved in their creation.

Teachers’ Exhibition Preview

Join the excitement, celebrate and preview this year’s exhibition on the last night of install. Meet exhibiting artists and view and discuss their work with them. Refreshments, Kids Guide, Exhibition Catalogue and education resources will be provided. The Teachers’ Preview may contribute to Elective PD relating to the delivery and assessment of the NSW Curriculum.
