COTTESLOE #SXSMOMENTS PHOTO CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Posted: April 15, 2016 / News

After much deliberation from our panel of judges (Lauren Bath, Jarrad Seng, Jessica Wyld, Clyde Yee), we are excited to reveal that the winner of the 2016 Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe #sxsmoments photo competition is Serena Thomas (@sunnyperth) of Perth, WA for her photo of Tony Jones OAM ‘lucky bay‘ Serena receives 1 return flight to Sydney, 3 nights accommodation during Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2016 and the opportunity to be one of our official exhibition photographers for a day.

Describing the winner, one of our illustrious Judges Clyde Yee commented “it is a beautifully shot tight, sharp image taken at the right time and in the right place – the muted colours of the setting Perth sun provide the perfect backdrop to silhouette Tony Jones’ work and the milling crowd, also in silhouette, add the people interest to complete the image.

The first runner up is @pepapotts for her photo of Zilvinas Kempinas sculpture ‘kakashi’.

The second runner up is @alvinfutography for his photo of Stuart & Hamish McMillan’s sculpture ‘escape‘.

Serena said to the Sculpture by the Sea team upon hearing the news that her photo won this year:

“Wow! A huge thank you to Sculpture by the Sea and the judges for selecting my photograph of Tony Jones’s “Lucky Bay”.

I love it, when as I say “the sculptures come to town”. It’s such a great event, which is evident by the thousands that visit Cottesloe over the two weeks that they are on display.

I love the atmosphere that they bring and the challenge of trying to showcase the sculptures through the lens with all the other incredible photographers.

The crowds can make it difficult to get “the shot” but in this instance they worked perfectly for my silhouette effect and a stunning sunset on this particular evening.

I appreciate the work and cost that must go into staging such an event and wish to thank all evolved for bringing these wonderful sculptures for all to see.

And finally, a huge thanks to the sculptors themselves. I look forward to the opportunity of photographing their amazing creations at Bondi later in the year and hope that I can do their work justice.”

The standard of entries was so high that the judges had a very difficult job and it came right down to the wire to select which photos would win. So congratulations to the winner, runners ups, finalists and all who entered this year’s competition!
