How is Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe funded?

Posted: March 11, 2019 / News

Many people ask how we raise the funds to stage Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe as a free exhibition each year.  Many more people presume the exhibition is fully funded from government sources. It is a huge challenge raising the $2.2M to stage Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe each year.  This pie chart shows how it comes together and our projected shortfall, including our aim of covering the artists’ reasonable freight costs – which we think is fair enough.

In August each year, following our Curatorial Panel’s review of the approximately 300 artist submissions received, we work with the 70+ selected artists from around WA and across the world to review and often advise on the fabrication, engineering and freight of their works, while preparing to manage the installation of the sculptures at Cottesloe beach.

Simultaneously our production, schools education, sculptures sales, design and accounts staff work with the artists on all aspects of their exhibiting in Sculpture by the Sea, which is often on a scale way beyond anything many of the artists have done before.  We do this while not entirely sure how and where all the funds will come from to stage the exhibition.

Thank you to everyone who helps us stage Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe. As you can see the exhibition would not be possible without our private donors. We’d love you to help by making a donation large or small here or at one of our exhibition marquees at Cottesloe.
