Sydney Water celebrates 21 years as Founding Sponsor and Supporting Partner of Sculpture by the Sea Bondi next month. Exhibiting artist Marina DeBris has been awarded with the Sydney Water Environmental Sculpture Subsidy for her work, ‘Inconvenience Store’, an outstanding work that addresses themes of consumption and shares the key message to keep our waterways clean.

Marina DeBris’s Inconvenience Store will be installed in Marks Park, on the exhibition trail, alongside Sydney Water refill stations and Water Bar.

The interactive performance piece is transactional between the artist and exhibition visitors as they have the opportunity to ‘purchase’ items from her convenience store that she has found washed up on the beach, provoking thoughts about ‘the consequences of our habits, and how we can change them’.

The artist has been evolving her ideas of making beach detritus into art since 2009 with the realisation that ‘the waste we create always comes back to haunt us.’
