Last Sunday, Artists from Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe joined artists from around the world to show their support for the people of Ukraine.

An 18m x 12m Ukrainian flag was unfurled and held high among the sculptures on Cottesloe beach by artists from around Australia and members of Perth’s Ukrainian community.

The Ukraine City of Mariupol was planning a unique Sculpture exhibition in association with Sculpture by the Sea in August last year that did not proceed due to increased Russian military activity.

The Mariupol exhibition organiser Kateryna Taylor, of the Kyiv based Port Agency – now a refugee on the western border of Ukraine – is coordinating the international “Artists Support Ukraine” effort.

David Handley, Sculpture by the Sea Founding CEO & Artistic Director, said, “today we joined with many Australian and international  artists as part of the international chorus of condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

There were tears, hugs and passionate singing of the Ukrainian national anthem by the more than one hundred people standing under the flag to hold it high. The flag has been donated to the Ukrainian community in Perth. The show of solidarity made the front page of perthnow.
