Sculpture by the Sea is pleased to welcome over 20 international sculptors to Cottesloe for this years exhibition. We have a number of returning artists along with first time exhibitors from New Zealand, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, China, UK, Czech Republic, Denmark and America.
While some of the artists are still putting the finishing touches to their artworks, a number of crates and containers have been packed, sealed and have already started the journey to Australia. It can take works travelling from Europe over 45 days from departure to arrival, which means in some cases the works are in transit longer than they are on display.
The most recent work to set sail was ‘mi no.5’ (pictured) by Wen Di Zhang, a stand of pink steel mesh flamingos loaded in Xingang, China and arriving into Fremantle, WA in the coming weeks.
Crating and packing the artworks is a skill in itself, especially if the work is made from a 2.5m long, 2,000kg piece of granite as is the case with Japanese sculptor, Keizo Ushio’s work ‘oushi zokei hexagonal’.
In addition to the 20+ international artists there are also interstate works being trucked in from TAS, VIC, NSW and ACT to join almost 30 WA based artists.
